The CD-ROM drive typically occupies an internal drive bay. It may also be an external unit, connected to the computer through |cables|. An external housing of sturdy plastic or metal protects the internal components from damage. Some CD-ROM drives have a drawer which slides out to accept the CD. Others have a hinged lid which opens, revealing the disc spindle. Another type has a "disc caddy" which holds the disc and is inserted like a regular floppy disk.
